A reader wrote us asking about using pressure-treated wood instead of concrete for a basement or crawl space. Senior Editor Travis Larson built homes with wood foundations for many years and had this to say:
“I live in a house that I built 35 years ago with a wood foundation and in my days as a contractor have built dozens of them for customers, and I’ve never heard a single complaint. They’re fast and easy to build, energy efficient and easy to finish, and adding windows or doors is a snap. There is no downside. In fact, it has always puzzled me that wood foundations aren’t the choice for all new homes.”
