Extend the life of your outdoor furniture, planters and other items made of wood with this simple tip:

Mix up a batch of epoxy and spread it on the parts of, in this case, a wood bench that come in contact with the ground—especially end-grain pieces.

The epoxy will create a tight seal, keeping out moisture, dirt and other elements that can weather the wood quickly. It also forms a hard, durable surface, similar to furniture pads but for the outdoors.

A disposable plastic lid (from a container of yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) works well as a surface for mixing epoxy. And a plastic spoon is a great tool for stirring the epoxy. Use the scoop side of the spoon to apply a generous amount of the mixture onto the feet of the bench and then use the back side of the spoon to spread it out evenly. Let the epoxy dry completely before placing the bench outdoors.
