Colorful Stripe Painted Stairs
If your white and wood stairs are starting to bore you, add a colorful stripe! This idea (shown here by @housegnborg) doesn’t require much paint or labor. The most challenging part is measuring and taping so the color is even on each stair riser. This bold chartreuse is gorgeous, but anything goes for a project like this. Take a risk!
Pastel Rainbow Painted Stairs
Melissa of @our_home_in_colour calls this her “pastel rainbow stairway to heaven,” and we must agree that it certainly looks divine! A simple clear stain coating on the stain treads allowed the wood grain to break up all the color. The staircase is a great place to experiment with brights and pastels because it doesn’t require the same commitment as painting an entire room.
Black-and-White Painted Stairs
If your stairs feature dated carpet, consider ripping it out for a fresh paint job, as @lagirl310 did here.
Keep in mind, removing carpet from stairs isn’t quick or easy. It involves carefully removing tack strips, carpet padding, staples and nails, as well as thoroughly sanding the wood after. And that’s before even opening a paint can! But these chic black-and-white stairs are proof the effort is definitely worth it. Check out the full tutorial here.
Simple Gray Painted Stairs
Sometimes simplicity is the right choice. This painted staircase from @fezzaanddel is a breath of fresh air against the more ornate decor that surrounds it. This light-gray hue presents just the right amount of color. A neutral paint choice might not be as exciting as bold and bright color options, but it will look modern and sophisticated for years to come.
Painted Stairs With a Unique Banister
These turquoise stairs by @the_warren_crew_at_52 pop against the white walls, creating a fun and modern centerpiece for the hallway. The banister’s graphic design is stunning on its own, but the paint color takes it to the next level.
Of course, freshly painted stairs will scuff eventually. Protect the finish with a carpeted stair runner, as shown in the example here.
Colorful Painted Stair Risers
Here’s another colorful stairway idea sure to make you and your guests smile. When planning your color placement, go in order of the rainbow (see the previous example) or choose a random pattern as shown here. Just be sure to choose paint in the same color family for a cohesive look, like the earthy and muted colors chosen here by @our_wee_housee.
Teal Painted Stairs
A couple of gallons of teal paint (Forest Edge by Behr) transformed this dark and dreary mudroom staircase into a gorgeous showstopper. Painting the wainscoting in the same color ties the whole look together, and makes a big impact in what could be an afterthought of a space. Great job @wildwillowsfarm!
Green Painted Stair Runner
These stairs by @no.11_thegreenhouse are making us green with envy! The olive green painted stair runner is the perfect dose of color for this entry, and coordinates beautifully with the colorful rug and cheerful yellow door. A dark paint color like this is a smart choice for stairs because it hides those inevitable footprints and scuffs.
All Black Painted Stairs
Replacing an old-fashioned staircase can be an extremely expensive job. Instead, paint it black! Going all black gives even the most outdated staircase a modern look, and for a fraction of the cost.
@house_on_cedar chose Satin Black by Behr for this stunner. She describes this color as a soft black that’s not too harsh against the white walls.
