Buying a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Self-propelled lawn mowers make mowing a lawn faster and easier. But not all self-propelled mowers are alike. They’re heavier and more expensive, and the additional parts mean more items needing repairs. Considering all that, it’s essential to get the right mower for your yard.
Key elements to consider are the type of drive system (front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel), budget and features such as mulching, blade management and convenience. We’ll highlight some of the best self-propelled mowers that excel with various features so that you can find the best solution for your needs.
You’ll notice a lot of familiar names on this list. There are three or four brands that dominate the gas models, and a couple of others that dominate electric options.
Best Rear-Wheel Drive Self-Propelled Mower
The Toro Super Recycler is a great overall mower. This rear-wheel drive model features an enhanced blade system for improved mulching and a bag collection system. But what really sets it apart is Toro’s flex handle suspension. The ability to absorb bumps and bounces reduces discomfort from engine shake and uneven terrain, making the ride much more comfortable.
Best Front-Wheel Drive Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Front-wheel drive units like this Troy-Bilt model TB210 are less capable of tackling uneven or inclined yards, but they are easier on the wallet. If you have a relatively flat yard and want simple, affordable self propulsion, then this is a good machine to check out.
One more thing to consider: It you plan on using a bagging attachment for your clippings, the weight to the rear will reduce the traction of the front wheels, making the drive less effective.
Best All-Wheel Drive Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
The Troy-Bilt XP features a rugged chassis construction, oversized rear wheels for easier handling on slopes and a powerful 190 cc (cubic centimeter) Honda engine with auto-choke. It even has a front bumper and rake guard that makes it look a little like something out of a Mad Max movie.
Although we’re featuring this Troy-Bilt lawn mower in the all-wheel drive category, it switches between front, rear and all-wheel drive as needed, giving you the traction you need when you need it.
Best Self-Propelled Mower for Easy Storage
We’ve already seen the Recycler line on this list, but the Toro Recycler 22-inch SmartStow cordless is here for its incredibly easy storage. Some lawn mowers fold to store vertically, but most have poor ratings and feedback. A cordless model is lighter weight and has no gas or oil to drip out when stored vertically.
This model also has Toro’s Personal Pace variable-speed drive, a battery that functions with a range of other Toro tools and a cut time of up to 40 minutes. Plus, when you’re done using it, just fold it up. It will take up 70 percent less floor space than a regular mower.
Best One-Touch Start Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
If you want the easy start convenience of electric power without sacrificing the traditional feel and power of gas, look no further than the Yard Force YF22ESSPV.
Although it runs on a traditional Briggs and Stratton gas engine, the starter is powered by a rechargeable 20-volt battery. That means pulling the starter is a thing of the past.
With a 163 cc engine on its 21-inch cutting deck, it’s got plenty of power. It ships with a two-bushel clippings bag. An optional package includes a leaf blower that runs on the same 20-volt battery.
Best Mulching Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
If you’d rather mulch your lawn and return some of those nutrients to the soil, then take a look at the Honda HRX217VKA. Its MicroCut Twin Blades provide four cutting surfaces, resulting in finely shredded grass clippings that can easily filter back to the ground. And with the Versamow System, you’ll be able to mulch, bag, discharge from the rear or shred leaves, all without breaking out tools to shift between modes.
While the Versamow System may be the star of the show, this mower’s GCV200 engine packs all the power you need. The Honda Hydrostatic Cruise Control lets you find your comfort zone between 0.1 and 4 mph.
Best Gas-Powered Self-Propelled Mower Splurge
If you want a mower that cuts the number of laps around the yard as easily as a blade of grass, your best bet is a Toro TimeMaster.
With a massive 30-inch cutting deck and a powerful 223cc Briggs and Stratton motor, this self-propelled beast is almost 50 percent wider than most push lawn mowers. That means you’ll be done in a fraction of the time, and back to enjoying your summer.
Most Versatile Cordless Self-Propelled Mower
The Ego Power+ was also a contender for the best cordless self-propelled mower, but we thought its SelectCut interchangeable blade system made it deserving of its own entry. The mower takes three interchangeable lower blades — one for mulching, one generating extra suction for more efficient bagging, and one for an extended run time.
In addition, the EGO Power+ has a lower blade that fits in with all three upper blade options, cutting clippings into finer fragments. The variable speed and self propel options are dial controlled, and the 56-volt Lithium battery delivers 45 minutes of cutting time on a single charge.
Best Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Coming in at a lower price than the EGO, this Greenworks self-propelled model uses two 40-volt batteries rather than a single larger supply.
In a bit of clever design, the batteries don’t discharge simultaneously. Instead, when one is drawn down, the mower switches over to the other. So you might finish mowing the lawn and immediately place one of the batteries into one of the other 50+ tools in the Greenworks 40-volt system.
All in all, it’s a strong pick and a great overall value.
Best Budget Self-Propelled Mower
We’re not going to lie: When we saw the price on this mower we thought it was a typo. The Pulsar PTG1221SA2 is a new addition to The Home Depot 2021 mower lineup. Coming in at less than $300 is impressive, even more so when you look at some of the features it includes: rear-wheel drive, a 200 cc engine, 10-inch rear wheels and a grass clipping bag. At a price like this, it definitely deserves a second look!
