Buying a Litter Box
In the market for a new litter box for your cat? So many options and choices abound that it can be hard to figure out which kind to buy. Here’s a rundown of six popular litter box styles so you can determine the right one for you and your feline friend.
Open Litter Boxes
Open litter boxes are the “traditional” style familiar to most people. Open litter boxes are typically cheap and effective, a great option if you need to buy for multiple cats. Some cats prefer open litter boxes because they can see everything that’s going on and keep an eye out for potential threats.

Covered Litter Boxes
Covered litter boxes feature a lid that helps keep odors inside the box. While the odor control is certainly nice, keep in mind that with the lid in the way, covered litter boxes are tougher to clean. If your cat likes privacy, it may prefer a covered litter box over one out in the open.
Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes
Want a litter box that takes care of the mess for you? Self-cleaning litter boxes promise exactly, sifting and raking through the litter and collecting waste in a small compartment you can easily empty out. Fair warning, though: You cat may take some time to acclimate to a self-cleaning litter box.
Designer Litter Boxes
If you’re looking for a litter box that no one can tell is one, check out designer litter boxes. They’re made to look like high-end pieces of furniture so that they blend in with the rest of your home décor. Some even double as planters!

Sifting Pan Litter Boxes
Just because it doesn’t clean itself doesn’t mean it has to be hard to clean. Sifting pan litter boxes — basically two boxes in one — make cleanup simple.
One box with a grate on the bottom fits inside another. When the time comes for cleaning, lift the first box and let the litter sift through the holes in the grate, leaving behind only the waste.
Disposable Litter Boxes
Disposable litter boxes are all about convenience. Instead of scooping out or sifting through the litter, cat owners can simply throw away the entire box. If you choose this option, look for disposable litter boxes made of biodegradable materials that won’t clog up landfills.
