Build a Kitchen Island Cart with Crates

Add storage and a worktop to your kitchen with this island cart project.

Built around nine food storage crates, this kitchen island cart is super-simple. Follow the instructions and illustrations below to build one yourself.

Materials

  • (6) Large Crates
  • (3) Vegetable Crates
  • (2) 4’ x 8’ x .5” Plywood Sheets
  • 4’ x 8’ .1875” Plywood Sheet
  • (4) Casters
  • 1-1/4” Brad Nails
  • 3/8” Wood Screws

Tools

  • Circular Saw/Miter Saw
  • Drill
  • Brad Nailer

  • (4) 18” x 31” x 1/2” Plywood Boards (Vertical Dividers)
  • (2) 12.75” x 18” x 1/2” Plywood Boards (Horizontal Dividers)
  • (2) 12” x 14” x 1/2” Plywood Boards (Horizontal Dividers)
  • 43.5” x 20” x 1/2” Plywood Board (Top)
  • 41.5” x 18” x 1/2” Plywood Board (Base)
  • 41.5” x 31” x .1875” Plywood Board (Back)

Instructions

1. Arrange vertical plywood boards (the middle dividers) 14 in. apart and secure them through the base with brad nails.

2. Attach the top so that there is an even overhang on all sides and secure it with brad nails.

3. Insert horizontal dividers evenly spaced as shown, secure them with brad nails.

4. Insert the crates and secure casters to base using wood screws. That’s it! Add some paint, if you wish, and the finished project shown below includes some signs on the front of the crates to indicate what’s stored inside.
